BTCB British Nationals 2010 (Manchester)
posted 31/01/10Match report (3 Competitors, 2 medals claimed)
Adam (weight category -80kg)
Adams first match (Quarter-final) was against a yellow belt from a club based in Liverpool (Elite). A well fought match with the final score 6 / 8 in Adams favour, taking him into medal contention. In the Semi-Final Adam was matched up against a blue belt player from Edinburgh University. This was a good match; however it ended 4 / 10 to his opponent. Adam knows he had it in his power to win this one, however its not always about winning, but about what you learn from defeat, and what you do with that information and experience going forward. Knowing Adam, he will use it positively and come back faster and stronger for future competitions. Adam claimed the Bronze medal for his weight category, having won his first fight.
Konstantin (weight category +87kg)
Konstantin was matched up against an opponent who essentially used his height to his advantage. Konstantin needed to secure this win to ensure a place on the medals podium. It was closely fought but ended 7 / 12 to the opponent. This is only a minor set back; Konstantin will take what he learnt from the experience and use it to his advantage for future events.
Tonde (weight category -80kg)
Tondes first match was against a player from Scorpion Taekwondo. It was a close match for each of the 3 x 1minute 30seconds rounds; however Tonde maintained the upper hand through out each round - the score line as follows: 3-2 (Round One), 6-3 (Round Two), 7-6 (Round 3). This first match win, took Tonde into the Semi-Finals to face a player from Bristol of equal grade. Tonde fought a technical fight and won by the "10 point gap" rule (used to make match management more efficient) effectively this means Tonde maintained a lead that his opponent was unable to come back on. (Round breakdown : 2-2 (Round 1), 11-2 (Round 2), 12-2 (Round 3). Tonde now having secured his place in the final had to face the same player from Edinburgh University that stopped Adams progression in the tournament. The final was exciting and hard fought, both players aware of what was at stake, fought a very high scoring match. Tonde needed to claw back the opponents point lead, and did admirably to do so, however it wasnt to be. The judging of points ensured that Tondes opponent claimed the win with a final score of 18-23(Final score). Tonde, therefore, claimed the Silver medal for his weight category.

Konstantin
Konstantin fought a great and high scoring match at Stirling, and managed to shore in and shorten the lead of his opponent, but ultimately, fell short of the final win. The match finished: 20 / 18 (Round 3). Incidentally his opponent couldnt continue onto the next round due to injuries sustained in his fight with Konstantin.
Ritchie
Ritchie had a commendable match against a player with more competition match experience. He did not secure the win this time, but will use the experience to develop his competition strategy going forward. The match finished: 5 / 23 (Round 3). Ritchie claimed the Silver medal for his weight category.
Tonde
Tonde currently a blue belt at the time of this competition, fought against a black belt opponent. By the end of the first round he was chasing the match by a deficit of one point. In the second round this gap Increased; the necessary adjustments to competition strategy were made and by the end of round 3, Tonde had secured the well deserved win, in an exciting and high scoring match. The match finished: 18 / 24 (Round 3). Tonde claimed the Gold medal for his weight category

Sandra
What can I say that hasnt already been said. Sandra has faultless competition etiquette and technique. She is a great example of how to conduct oneself as a competitor at events, both in her performance and her discipline. Sandras relentless attack strategy led to the final score of: 7/26 (Final round). Sandra claimed the Gold medal, for her weight class and category. Congratulations Sandra!
Peter
Peters first TKD competition in some time, seen him face a blue belt opponent with much more match experience. He fought a hard match however was unable to secure the win; Peter will chalk this one up as experience. Congratulations to Peter for claiming the Silver medal for this particular fight, for Category B fighters. Additional: Peter also secured a Gold medal in category C as his opponent failed to show up for the tournament. So 2 medals it is then!! Congratulations!!!
Adrain
Adrians positive and attack-minded approach belied the fact that it was his first ever TKD competition to have participated in. The match finished: 20 / 12 (Round 3, Semi-Final) In Adrians favour, congratulations on a well deserved first competition and medal win. Adrian faced another Yellow belt in the final, but was unable to capitalize on his earlier success; the matched finished in favour of his opponent. Adrian secured the Silver medal for his weight category and class.
Thomasz
We all know Thomasz to be a strong, quick and hard fighter. This should have been an easy match for him. Thomasz was relentless in his attack, showing good, positive match management and strong technical ability, reigning in axe kick after axe kick, but some how is opponent was able to survive the onslaught and secured the win against Thomasz by a narrow margin. Thomasz claimed the Bronze medal for his weight class and category.
John
Ive seen many of Johns competition performances, and although this match ended in defeat, it is by far his best performance to date. He showed his courage, technical ability and strong will power to keep going even when the match was ebbing away from him. Congratulations for an outstanding effort against a good black belt opponent. John still claimed the Bronze medal, for his efforts.
Congratulations to all the competitors who took part, for a good turn out and excellent effort; and thank you to all those who came to support the team, your backup is much appreciated. See you all at the next competition!!!

Asif Mohammed Following a Quarter Final first round pass (due to amount of players in actual weight category) Asif, a resident Club Black Belt with numerous competition medals and awards from the UK, European and USA Taekwondo circuit, fought a close but victorious semi-final that secured his place in his weight class final. Another closely fought fight ensued, however in the last round (A - class fighters required to fight 3 x 2min rounds) the scoring started to get out of reach and finished in favour of his opponent 5-1. Asif took the Silver this time but a sustained return to the competition circuit should see him take top spot once again.
Thomasz Grzyb This weight class had more entrants, and as such, Thomasz needed to get through the first round Quarter final if he hoped to progress further. He dispatched with his (1st Kup) opponent comfortably with a score of -1-4 (minus figures recorded against opponent due to illegal moves etc.). The win took him into the Semi-Final against a technically proficient Black Belt opponent. Although Thomasz put up a strong and valiant display the final score finished in favour of his opponent 5-1. This fighter consequently went on to win the final, so some consolation to be gained from that fact.
Tonde Musunhe A notable thing about competitions is the reputation a fighter can build for himself. Tonde performance in his last competition, and the resultant win by knock-out, ensured that his reputation and previous victory would send shock waves through any potential future opponents; Needless to say, his first opponent in the weight class quarter final decided to withdraw (possible fearful of suffering the same fate as his predecessor) offering Tonde a free pass into the Semi-Final, a victory of the mind! Tonde's Semi-Final fight was a reasonably comfortable affair finishing 1-7 in Tonde's Favour. The final brought excitement. Tonde trailed in points at the beginning, his opponent predominantly set out to neutralise Tonde's kicks by closing down any available space; however, the opponent, failed to capitalise on his early start and following a few game play tips from his coach (Bryan) Tonde made the necessary adjustments to his game plan and comfortably won the final 7-12. The reputation grows!
Finally A big thanks goes out to all those that attended from the club, fighters and spectators alike, it was an enjoyable event, made even more so by the large turnout, and words of encouragement and support for our fighters. See you all at the next event!
